Continuing their strong pre-season preparations, last week, our reserves team took on yet another NPL powerhouse, Perth SC reserves. Balga SC Reserves team head coach Adrian Caloiero was expecting a tough game, “The game against Perth SC was a real eye opener for the playing group and also for my self and my coaching staff. Coming up against the best u21s side in the state, we knew they were going to be a good footballing team, well drilled and well coached”.

“All I asked was for the boys to work hard try to absorb the pressure for the first 5-10 minutes, and play our style. As coaches, there was no doubt in our minds that with the quality and depth of the assembled squad we would be able to match them” he continued.

And match them they did. The team looked confident and very comfortable in possession. “Once the game got started, our work rate was fantastic and we got ourselves right in the game and were competitive all over the park. It is hard to pick out the standouts as everyone that started the game and came on gave their all and that’s all you can ask as a coach. All the boys can hold their heads high.” said Caloiero.

Caloiero is pleased with the way the pre-season is progressing and the caliber of opponents including Western Knights, Balcatta SC and Perth SC, “the past few weeks have been so positive and showed we can match it with some of the best teams in the state. Hopefully we can grow from this experience and continue to build on what our goals are as a club and help the push for promotion” he said.

The game held another significance for Caloiero. His old coach and mentor, Basil Lenzo, is the current Perth SC reserves coach.

Balga SC Reserves team’s next opponent is the newly relegated division 2 side Swan United. Caloiero is not taking the challenge lightly and is excited about performing against a team in the same division for the upcoming season. “Swan United are also in our division this year and we are looking forward to testing ourselves and to see where we are at. The main goals for us this week are not to be complacent coming up against a team in the same division, to keep a positive mentality and stick the the game plan that Tahir, Geof and myself will be working on all week. We know that if we do so, a positive result will come our way. All we ask for is a disciplined and patient build up play from the boys and to continue the work rate that we have been building over the last few weeks”.

Balga SC kick off against Swan United this Sunday at 11am at Swan View Park (Morrison RD Swan View).
