A depleted Balga SC Masters side suffered a big loss in their Masters Cup match against Joondalup United.
With 5 regular starters missing from the team, Balga SC Masters were on the back foot before the ball was kicked against the benchmark team of the Masters competition. “Joondalup are a team that has always set the bar in the Premier division and are hard to play against at the best of times let alone when you’re missing a few lads through injuries and personal commitments” said Balga SC utility Geof Green.
Joondalup dominated for the majority of the match but Balga were wasteful in front of goal. Hosts converted their chances early in the half and were 3:0 up at the break.
Balga started the second half on the front foot and made a number of good chances only to be thwarted by the Joondalup defense. Joondalup struck again against the run of play and Balga’s intensity and pace dropped off. This remained for the rest of the game with Joondalup free scoring another 6 goals to inflict Balga’s biggest loss.
Green says that the score probably didn’t reflect the game “Joondalup definitely deserved the win. They’re a great side but we made it easy for them. We allowed them too much time and space in our half and didn’t deal with the ball as we generally do. Had we taken our chances we could have put a bit of pressure on them and made a difference.”
Balga will need to recoup quick as they take on another very strong side when they face Perth City at the Kingsway Sporting Complex this Saturday night.
“We’re hopeful that a few of the lads will be back for the clash with Perth City. They’re a great side but we need to dig deep and return to our winning ways” added Green.
The game kicks off at 7 PM.
